Pak Students Silver Medal at iGEM 2017

Boston, Pakistani students were awarded with the silver medal for showing their project at iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) 2017 and this ceremony was organized at Hynes Convention Center, Boston on Monday. The team of Pakistani team was comprised of Ushma Farooq, Muhammad Dawood, Ayesha Khan, Babar Nawaz, Hasnain Qasim and Hassan Raza.

The iGEM team was belonged to Institute of Integrative Biosciences, CECOS University Peshawar and Directorate of Science and Technology, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa supported the team. The team of iGEM Peshawar was selected this year for Best Bio Safety Award. The project of the team was known as ‘reporter fish’ and it can identify the heavy metal contamination in fresh water and it changes the color of its body in response.

The team designed and constructed genetic (DNA) circuits, which is required for this function and has tested it in the bacterial cells. The students said that their project will have direct influence on livelihood of fish farmers and health of fish consumer crosswise the state.
