Bahria University (Urdu: بحریہ یونیورسٹی; BU) is a multi-campus university with headquarters in Islamabad, Pakistan. BU has two main campuses, one in Islamabad and the other in Karachi, Pakistan. Other constituent units include the Pakistan Naval Academy Karachi, Pakistan Navy War College Lahore, Bahria Institutes of Management and Computer Sciences at Karachi and Islamabad, the Institute of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Islamabad, the Institute of Psychology at PNS SHIFA Karachi and Bahria Colleges at Karachi and Islamabad.

It was established by the Pakistan Navy in February 2000 by Presidential Ordinance No. V of 2000. Though the university was planned to run on a self-financing basis without depending on government funds, it has yet to achieve this status.

Bahria is a coeducational public university recognized by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and the Pakistan Engineering Council. It offers two- and four-year programs for undergraduates and graduates, backed by a research institute. The emphasis of the university is on medicine, engineering and management sciences, though other disciplines are offered.

Bahria University is the awarding body of Shifa College of Medicine and Frontier Medical College for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree.

Bahria has campuses in multiple locations in Pakistan. The two main campuses are in Islamabad and Karachi. Minor institutes’Italic text’ are at Lahore, Abbottabad and UAE. ”’Bold text’Italic text’Italic text””

Degrees offered

Bahria offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in business administration, computer sciences, engineering, environmental sciences, law, medicine and psychology at various institutes across Pakistan.

Achievements and awards

  • The first Pakistani university to join more than 300 universities across the Asia-Pacific region that have deployed mobile computing and wireless technologies.
  • The first Pakistani university to link its degree program with community service.
  • The university has equipped 4500 students with laptops with wireless technology. In this regard, the university has signed MOUs with Intel, Acer Inc., and the Bank of Punjab. Laptops are provided to students at discounted prices with installment plans.
  • The first university in Pakistan to establish a campus at Gwadar. The Prime Minister of Pakistan has approved the establishment of the Institute of Marine Sciences at Gwadar while the Pakistan Navy will provide land for the same.
  • Won 3rd prize in the Business Launch Competition in the Procter and Gamble Challenge 2010.

Prime Minister visit

On 15 October 2006, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz visited Bahria University’s Earth sciences department and granted a loan to 15 needy students.

Sports

The university organizes sports events, galas and entertainment programs for the students. These include sports such as basketball, cricket, football, badminton, table tennis, hockey, tennis, trekking, volleyball, sailing and athletics.

Student Resource Center (SRC)

There are five clubs under the SRC:

  • Arts and Dramatics Club
  • Literary and Debates Club
  • Media Club
  • Music Society
  • Events Club

Bentham Society

SRC runs an official news blog for providing news and information about happenings inside university. SRC publish Bahria University official newsletter monthly named as “Bugle”.

X-news

Students of Bahria University Islamabad launched a student news service called X-News on 23 April 2009. The service delivered news directly to the cell phones of subscribers for free. After a great response from Bahria students and faculty, an X-News website was launched. In 2009, the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute, the University of Central Punjab and the National University of Modern Languages joined the news network’s coverage.

Memorandum of understanding

The university signed a memorandum of understanding with Al-Khawarizmi International College of the United Arab Emirates on 7 December 2007 for academic collaboration between the institutes, which will open an opportunity for students from the Persian Gulf States to study in Pakistan.
