Punjab University Celebrates 130th Anniversary

Lahore, The Punjab University Lahore has celebrated its 130th anniversary on October 14, 2012. The University was established on the same day in 1882 in the Muslim majority area to meet the educational demands of the people living in Punjab and surrounding areas. Initially this University was conducted matriculation, higher secondary school and high level examinations in the whole province but after the establishment of different education board the system of matriculation and intermediate exams was handfed over to Lahore Board.

The University has about 13 faculties along with 73 disciplines in which about 30,000 students are studying in all campuses. The old campus was established in the center of the city with historical buildings and a hostel with the main campus.

The senate meeting was held at Simla in October 14, 1882 where it was decided to establish Punjab University in Lahore to look after the educational matters and impart high level of education to the students living in Punjab. Sir James Broadwood Lyall was appointed its first vice chancellor. This University produced three noble prize winners Dr. Abdus Salam, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar and Har Gobind Khorana.
