Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology, or SSUET, is a private sector engineering university located in Karachi, Pakistan. It was named after the 19th-century Muslim education reformer Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology was founded by the current Chancellor, Z.A. Nizami. Nizami is the former Director General of the Karachi Development Authority (KDA) as well as the current President of Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys.

SSUET was created on 8 October 1993 as the first private technical education institute in Pakistan, receiving its charter from the Sindh Assembly on 17 September 1995. It is recognized by Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission as a degree-granting institute and its engineering programs are accredited by the Pakistan Engineering Council. It has over 4,350 students in Bachelor of Science programs, over 200 students in its Master of Science program, and 210 faculty members. Its graduates today lead most of the top related departments of PAF, Pakistan Army, Pakistan Navy, PIA and other civilian sectors.

History

Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology is based on the heritage of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and of the Aligarh Movement. An educational and social reformer, Sir Syed emerged on the scene in the sub-continent towards the middle of the 19th century. In the spirit of the Aligarh Movement, AMUOBA (Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys Association) focused attention on furthering education in Pakistan, especially science and technology. An achievement in this field has been the establishment of Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET). SSUET came into being on 8 October 1993, and its Charter formalities were completed by an Act passed by the Sindh Assembly on 17 September 1995.

Recognition and reputation

Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan places Sir Syed university at No.12 in its rankings in engineering category. [1] The university is a member of International Association of Universities and Association of Common Wealth Universities. It is represented on the Governing Boardof the International Association of Universities (IAU) through its Vice Chancellor. All the engineering programs of the university are accredited by the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) and recognized by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC). It is listed in the category (W) (highest ranking universities) by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC). It was graded as a five-star university by the Charter Inspection and Evaluation Committee (CIEC). It is the first ISO 9001:2008 certified university of Pakistan.

Departments

Electronic Engineering Department

The Department of Electronic Engineering provides a BS degree programme focused on integrated electronics, microprocessor-based systems, feedback and control systems, power and industrial electronics, and telecommunication engineering.

Biomedical Engineering Department

Sir Syed University Of Engineering and Technology is the first university in Pakistan to start a Biomedical Engineering program.[citation needed]

Civil Engineering Department

The Civil Engineering Department is chaired by Dr S.M. Makhdumi who is also Dean, Faculty of Engineering. In addition to the undergraduate program, the department offers postgraduate courses. Department collaborations are in process with The Intelligent Sensing for Innovative Structures Research Network of Centres of Excellence in Canada (ISIS Canada) and University of Manchester, UK.[citation needed]

The department has nine labs: Highway Transportation Engineering Laboratory, Soil Mechanics Laboratory, Surveying Laboratory, Computer-Aided Design Laboratory, Water Supply and Sanitary Engineering Laboratory, Plain and Re-inforced Concrete Laboratory, Strength of Materials Laboratory, Hydraulics and Fluid Mechanics Laboratory, and Geology Laboratory.

Computer Engineering Department

The Computer Engineering Department is the largest department in the university with 1700 undergraduate students in its BS program and 100 graduate students in its MS program. The department is the largest computer department of any university, private or public, in the country.[citation needed]

VLSI & Embedded Systems Research Center The center was established in February 2006 at Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology, Karachi in collaboration with Avieon Inc. of California, USA. The lab is administered by the Department of Computer Engineering. The objective of the research center is to provide facilities for design and research work in the field of VLSI and Embedded Systems. Research work is focused on the development of high performance, embedded multimedia and image processing solutions.

The Research Center operates under the technical leadership of Dr. Aamir Farooqui (CTO at Avieon Inc.) and the Chairman of the Computer Engineering Department at Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology.

Links Continuing Education Programme Under the umbrella of Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology, a Continuing Education Programme (CEP) was established in 1997. The programme disseminates knowledge on engineering and IT applications including modern programming languages, project management, computerized accounting, and financial management, computer networking systems, and graphics and design courses. These programmes are beneficial to those who cannot attend educational institutions during their regular timings. Courses are arranged in the evening and on Sundays.

SSUET Internet Sir Syed University has a high speed 2 MB dedicated leased circuit to connect to the internet. All the inter block connectivity is on fiber optic working in different VLANs. High Speed multiprocessor HP Proliant ML 530 server as the Internet Gateway for Sir Syed University is providing. The university has taken an innovative step by establishing an Internet Services Provider, SSUET.NET. The SSUET.NET is a university-associated ISP, focusing on providing high-quality Internet Services including dial-up access, deidcated dial-up ports etc.

SSUET.NET equipment includes SUN Servers, MAX TNT Access Server, 3COM and CISCO equipment. For security, Microsoft ISA and Cisco PIX 52s are implemented on th ecampus.

Software Technlogy Inovators Established in 1999, Software Technology Innovators (STI) was founded by Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology, with an aim to help Pakistan’s software industry by providing Business-to-Business (B2B) and Business-to-Consumer (B2C) IT solutions.

STI’s main development facility is within the premises of SSUET in Karachi. It has a a network of 1000+ Ethernet nodes, around 600 computer systems and extensive computing and networking resources including servers, workstations, routers and switches.

Sport The university has a sports ground in front of its main gate. This includes a basketball court, volleyball ground and cricket pitch for net practice. Steps for developing hockey and football grounds are in progress. A gymnasium contains equipment for gymnasium activities and body building.

A second campus of SSUET (200 acres) is under construction in the suburbs of Karachi. This campus is planned to be open by 2015.
