The foundation stone of Allama Iqbal Open University was laid down in May 1974, with the objective to provide educational opportunities for those talented students who cannot leave homes and also doing jobs in different cities. The university has been fulfilling its promise for the last 34 years.

Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has very unique education system as it is the first Open University in Asia. AIOU has its own specific philosophy, system, approach, functions and overall structure. University has its own main campus at Islamabad. The vast network of regional centers spreading in the whole country is busy in conveying services to its customers all over Pakistan and also in the Middle East. AIOU is an organization which is giving distance learning, including several disciplinary education assignments, workshops, tutorial levels and proper exam.

Recently Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Nazir Ahmed Sangi has started a computer training program using video-conferencing from the main campus of the University in Islamabad. He further added that the university is also working on a suggestion for creating a world-class computer training center in the region which will be proved fruitful for the students.

Admission are also offered for Semester Autumn 2012 by the AIOU in disciplines of MS, M.Phil – M.Phil leading to Ph.D. and Ph.D. All eligible candidates who come up to the requirements may apply for required field.
