Punjab govt to distribute laptops from June 20

Total 100,000 laptops will be distributed to the talented students of public sector higher education institutes from 20^th June 2014. It was announced by Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, chairperson HEC, and he also told that Pakistan will produce 1,000 laptops.

Dr. Mukhtar revealed this information during a press conference conducted at HEC Secretariat. Large numbers of media representatives were present there who were eager to know about the initiatives of HEC. Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed said that HEC has taken steps to enlarge the educational structure to less-developed and remote areas and is also improving the governance of universities. He also said that HEC has focused on the development of PhD faculty in last 12 years. He said that non-PhD faculty will be provided one year experience in any international university after their PhD degree from Pakistani university.

HEC chairperson also talked about the conversion of universities into smart universities that’ll provide information technology to the aspirants across the country. In the beginning, 7 universities are under schedule for smart universities. These include one each from 4 provinces, federal region, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. This project will start on 14^th August.

HEC has made an agreement with the British Council in which a non-credit compulsory course will be introduced in the universities that include social responsibility, ethical value system, social entrepreneurship and community services. The estimated cost of this project is 4.73 million pounds out of which British Council will provide 57% while HEC will share the remaining 43%.

He also informed that for MS and PhD studies, more than 7500 scholarships have been awarded and among them, 3300 have so far completed their studies.
