In the 13th edition of Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings, 6 Pakistani universities are present while there were only three last year in this list.
The top ranked Pakistani university remained National University of Science & Technology (NUST) that was present in 501-550 band and it is followed by Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) and Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU) at 2nd and 3rd spot respectively.
The three newly added Pakistani universities in the top 700 universities are University of Karachi, University of Engineering & Technology (UET) Lahore and University of Lahore. For the 5th consecutive year, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) remained the world’s top university in this ranking.
The statistics show that apart from NUST, all the other top ranked Pakistani universities are below in faculty/student ratio due to increase in number of students. But the employer reputation of all these universities have improved much which is an important reason for them to make a place in this ranking. Another important factor to determine Pakistani universities this year is the citation per faculty metric. Only QAU improved this factor while all the other Pakistani universities show poor performance regarding this factor.
Head of research at the QS Intelligence, Ben Sowter, told that investment levels play key role in the increase and decrease of level of universities this year. Due to this reason, the top 3 positions in this ranked are achieved by USA for the first time while few Asian countries have also improved their ranking but European countries like UK, Germany and Italy lost their positions.
The 4 important factors that determine the QS World University Rankings are teaching, research, internationalization and employability.
