Aim of ISSB is to select for the defense forces of Pakistan, those candidates who’ve the capabilities to complete successfully at the military academies their training course and also possess dynamic, social, mental and physical qualities to make during peace and war, successful leaders. For training as potential officers for all the three services of Pakistan, ISSB caters for selection of candidates. However, as per their overall requirement/schedule, Services Headquarters plan the total no. of candidates to be tested/ inducted in various courses.
ISSB follows three dimensional selection technique. Three different types of tests i.e. psyche test, GTO tests and Interviews are to be taken by all the candidates appearing before ISSB.
The Psychologist Officer, Group Testing Officers and Deputy Presidents administer these tests, who’re specialists in their respective fields.
PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTS
These tests are held on the morning of the first day and include intelligence and personality test.
Intelligence tests
There are verbal and non-verbal, two types of tests. Those candidates are screened out who fail to come up with the minimum standards.
Mechanical Aptitude test
To assess candidates’ basic mechanical sense, it is designed.

Group Tests
To find out the degree of officer like qualities in a candidate i.e team spirit, initiative, resourcefulness and his personality whether fits a role for an officer in the Armed Forces, the candidates are put through a number of standardized situations in group tests. These include;
Group Discussions
On given subject, informal discussions are conducted in a group.
Group Planning
On the model, a group plan for a given problem is to be evolved.
Group Tasks
Candidates are presented practical situations and left to solve these in three group tasks. Normally these comprise to carry objects of sufficient weight over obstacles.
Command Tasks
Each candidate is given a practical task requiring several men and in turn appointed the commander.
Individual Obstacles
Candidate is required to tackle simple obstacles.
Interviews
In an informal and objective manner, interviewer accesses the candidates. The questions mainly pertain to candidate’s academics, life, general aspects and awareness.
